Regression to the Mean - A Warning!

Let us be honest. Most of us are not inconsistent with our quiet time with the Lord because we do not have time.  We are inconsistent in prayer and Bible reading because we forget we are on a battlefield. Not a physical one, but a spiritual war waged in our minds and hearts. Since we do not see the fight, we do not prioritize the weapons. Instead, we focus on the comforts of this life while neglecting the very things that equip us to stand and fight: prayer and God’s Word.

Our flesh fights against God every single day. It does not take breaks. This is why Jesus said we must die daily. Not once, but every single day.

Our flesh is relentless. It does not care that you prayed yesterday. It does not care that you felt spiritual last Sunday. Paul understood this struggle intimately:

“The good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.” (Romans 7:19)

The battle is not just around you. It is in you.

You cannot live on yesterday’s obedience. You cannot rely on last week’s spiritual high. You need fresh strength, fresh grace, fresh mercy, fresh confession, and fresh focus every day. You only get this from the Word of God and prayer.

We are also not just dealing with bad habits. We are dealing with a world that naturally pulls us away from God.

Romans 12:2 says, “Be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

Conformity is passive. It happens when we do nothing. Transformation is intentional. It happens through the Word and obedience. It comes from a renewed mind, not just knowledge but true renewal.

My pastor said it like this: the revelation of Jesus reveals the truth about man.

Without Him, we can look pretty good. But Galatians 5:19 exposes what is really in us. When you stop pursuing God, you do not stay neutral. You regress to the mean. Back to the natural. Back to the flesh.

He also added:

You are what your heart is.

Doing the same natural things will keep producing the same natural results.

Lasting change only comes through spiritual transformation. Information alone is not transformation.

So today, do not coast. Do not count on yesterday’s fire. Victory is when you stay in the Word. Confess. Purify. Meditate on the Word. Be renewed daily. Because without Him, you will regress to the mean. And fast.
