“Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.” 1 Thessalonians 5:11

When someone has fallen, spiritually, emotionally, or morally. They are often already crushed under the weight of guilt. They don’t need a spotlight on their failure. They need a hand to help them rise.

As believers, our words carry power. We can speak life or we can deepen wounds. And in those vulnerable moments after someone falls, what we say or don’t say matters deeply.

Encouraging Words Help People Move Forward

A few simple phrases can be a lifeline:

“God’s mercy is bigger than this.”

“You’re not alone in this.”

“This isn’t the end of your story.”

“Let’s pray together and ask God to lead you.”

“You can walk forward in grace.  He’s still with you.”

These kinds of words don’t ignore sin. They point toward hope, healing, and restoration.

Discouraging Words Keep People Stuck

Some words, even if well-meaning, can damage instead of help:

“You always do this.”

“How could you let this happen?”

“I’m disappointed in you.”

“I thought you were better than this.”

Or even: complete silence with no compassion.

These responses can leave someone feeling condemned instead of convicted and may push them further into shame.

Sometimes Silence and Prayer Say More Than Words

There are moments when words fail, and that’s okay. Sitting beside someone, silently praying with them, or simply offering a hand on the shoulder can speak volumes.

You don’t need all the answers. You just need a heart that reflects Christ’s love and grace.

James 5:16 tells us, “Pray one for another, that ye may be healed.” Sometimes, the best healing begins in prayer.

It is the Holy Spirit’s job to convict. It is our job to pray and edify. Our role is not to point fingers, but to offer a hand.  To build up, not tear down.

Let’s be the kind of people who speak life, pray faithfully, and help others walk again, stronger in grace.
